My youngest has just commenced Reception and the eldest has entered Year 2. It's all change and even if my wife and I weren't ready for it, it seems both the children are - for the time being at least! First day portraits are mandatory in our house, as it provides a wonderful memory to look back on, share with family and remember where we've come from as we continue our life journey.
With the new school year, routines and life in general, we are also expecting a change of season. I love autumn. Some of my favourite family portrait sessions have been taken in autumn. It's can be a photographer's dream in many respects with the, at times, blustery wind, leaves on the ground and an amazing palette of colours to work with. Inevitably those leaves will end up in a shower over someone's head during the session. (#result)
Even with the certainty of change, it's always good to remember. I have a photo of my wife in the office from our wedding day. She looks amazing. It's one of those moments that can transport you to a place and time where it all comes flooding back. Another one is the portrait I took of my daughter on her 5th birthday that hangs in the sitting room. I love that picture, and more importantly, her. What's your favourite printed picture? Who's in it? Where does it reside? When was the last time you looked at it? Do you have any on display - if not, what has stopped that from happening?
My work as an artist has two parts. The narrative and the location. So call me a visual storyteller. I love getting to know people and find out about their family and story. Combine that with the places that they enjoy being and it makes for a compelling visual story. A lot of our stories are locked away on computers and storage devices that rarely see the light of day. Your story is important, it's worth telling and it's worth being "read".
This autumn, what changes are your family facing? Is it 'all change' or business as normal? Maybe it's an opportunity to reflect, maybe make a plan or even take time out with the family for some photos to mark this point in your journey?
